About the location

Les Alyscamps
Avenue des Alyscamps 13200 Arles

Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. The Romans set up their necropolis outside the city. In Arles, the most famous remains that of the Alyscamps, marked by the rise of Christianity and the aura of its first Arlesian martyr, Genest, in the third century. In the 12th century, the site was enriched by the Romanesque church of Saint-Honorat. In the 18th century, the Minimal Brothers built the impressive sarcophagus alley.
