Arènes d'Arles
Rond point des arènes, 13200 Arles
- Bouches-du-Rhône
- Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur
Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. Built at the end of the first century, the amphitheatre could accommodate approximately 21,000 spectators, who attended games and fights. In the Middle Ages, the monument was transformed into a district only to regain its original function in the 19th century. Today, bullfighting shows are regularly performed.
