This temporary exhibition of the Museum continues the themes discussed at the World Conservation Congress – IUCN 2021 in Marseille. It deals with the illegal trade in wildlife and their derivatives, which threatens the survival of animals and plants in the world but also in France. Carried out in collaboration with the French Customs and the French Biodiversity Office, it highlights many species, from the iconic rhinoceros to the discreet hippocampus and the impact of this market on biodiversity. Estimated at between 8 and 20 billion euros each year, this traffic is the fourth most profitable in the world after the trafficking of weapons, human beings and drugs.

Created in 1819, this year the Natural History Museum of Marseilles celebrates its 200 years and the 150 years of its installation at the Palais Longchamp inaugurated in 1869\. This overhaul of the museum’s first-level rooms combined with enhanced maintenance work on the interior of the building will result in the closure of the Museum’s rooms until October 18, 2019.
