Exhibition "Requiem" by the artist Lee Ufan

Exhibition "Requiem" by the artist Lee Ufan in the ancient and medieval necropolis of Alyscamps
17 and 18 September 2022Passed

After his exhibitions at the Palace of Versailles in 2014 and at the Pompidou Metz Centre in 2019, Lee Ufan wrote a new page about his passionate relationship with France. It presents the exhibition Requiem at the Alyscamps necropolis as part of the celebrations that the city of Arles is organizing this year to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the inscription of its rich Roman and Romanesque heritage on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Lee Ufan composed a journey consisting of new works, sometimes unpublished, specially designed to resonate with the ancient necropolis.

Arles offers an interesting example of the adaptation of an ancient city to the civilization of medieval Europe. It preserves impressive Roman monuments as well as exceptional antique collections. Inside the walls, Saint-Trophime with its cloister is one of the major monuments of Provençal Romanesque art. The Romans set up their necropolis outside the city. In Arles, the most famous remains that of the Alyscamps, marked by the rise of Christianity and the aura of its first Arlesian martyr, Genest, in the third century. In the 12th century, the site was enriched by the Romanesque church of Saint-Honorat. In the 18th century, the Minimal Brothers built the impressive sarcophagus alley.
