Hugues Châtin

The Dévoluy, a country where sheep have been reared for a long time, preserves on the limestone slabs that dot the alpine pastures, near the old guarding enclosures (jas) or even in a cave, the traces of the shepherds who brought their herds there, summer after summer, their herds. Dates, initials, religious signs or, more rarely, their names, they marked their passage through their engravings. Our three speakers have explored the Dévoluy and, in the Vallon Froid, the valleys of Âne, Barges and Rabou, they have found these traces, the oldest of which dates back to 1798. They then found who were some of these shepherds, their life, where they came from and propose us with this conference, from the graffiti, to enter the moving daily life of the transhumant shepherds up to Dévoluy. Having presented their research in 2021 at a symposium in La Rochelle, they will show us the Dévoluy as we have never seen it, through the eyes of the shepherds. Hughes CHATAIN (Groupe d'études et de recherche de sauvegarde de l'art rupestre), Eric Hustache (Natura 2000), and Guillaume LEBAUDY, anthropology researcher,
