    For a long time an impregnable fortress, Clisson Castle is a model of a fortified castle.
    Built by the powerful Clisson family from the 12th century, this castle becomes in the 15th century a strategic point protecting the border of the Duchy of Brittany. It was burned down during the Vendée War. In 1807, the artist François-Frédéric Lemot, sensitive to medieval ruins, bought the castle in order to preserve it from total destruction. The sculptor is thus one of the precursors of heritage protection. This building was classified in 1924 as a historical monument while it was still the property of the descendants of François-Frédéric Lemot. The latter transferred it to the Department of Loire-Atlantique in 1962. The monument still retains many examples of defensive architecture: archers, gunboats, stunners, etc.

On a barred spur overlooking the Sèvre (at its confluence with the Moine) and its crossing, the castle was implanted in the first half of the thirteenth.
