On the occasion of the 2022 European Heritage Days, enjoy many free activities!

Château de Talmont

On September 17 and 18, 2022, Talmont Castle opens its doors for free from 10:30 am to 6 pm.
Enjoy guided tours of the castle throughout the day: 11am, 2pm, 3pm, 3:30pm and 4pm.
A guided tour of the photographic exhibition of the archaeological excavations of the port of Talmont will also be offered at 4:30 pm.
It will be possible to meet the apothecary of the castle for about 30 minutes to discuss remedies and hygiene in the Middle Ages at 11:30, 14:30 and 17:00.
An introduction to crossbow shooting will also be possible all day long for an extra €1 per person.
Finally, by reservation, participate in the "Twilight Tour" at 8 pm (in addition 6€ adult and 3€ child between 5 and 12 years, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 September.

Located at the bottom of a valley once flooded by the sea, the castle of Talmont is built at the beginning of the XIth century by William the Bald in order to protect the city. Thanks to its numerous salt marshes and its important port on the Atlantic coast, Talmont had a strong economic potential until the 13th century. Following the remarriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine with the King of England Henry II Plantagenet, their son Richard Lionheart takes the title of Prince of Talmont. The Mauléon, lords of the place, carry out fortification work in the thirteenth century. The castle then becomes an impregnable fortress. In the second half of the thirteenth century, the Viscounts of Thouars took over the castle, which then had a secondary role, especially since its port became ensable and was replaced by that of Les Sables d'Olonne.
