Gaston Chaissac gilt heute als bedeutender Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts. Von bescheidener Herkunft, autodidaktisch, wird sein Werk sehr schnell von den avantgardistischen Schöpfern der kubistischen Bewegung bemerkt, die es ermutigen.
Sein Korpus von Zeichnungen, ein Großteil seines Werkes, ist reich und von großer Lebendigkeit. Gaston Chaissac befindet sich im Sanatorium von Clairvivre, nördlich der Dordogne, zwischen 1939 und 1942, einer Zeit der intensiven Schöpfung, aber auch der Fragen und existenziellen Krisen, die durch seine fruchtbare Korrespondenz offenbart wurden. Die Ausstellung umfasst rund 40 unveröffentlichte Originalzeichnungen aus dieser Zeit sowie großformatige Gemälde des Künstlers. Die Umgebung und der künstlerische Kontext werden von den Werken von Designern, mit denen Chaissac schon früh freundschaftliche Beziehungen pflegte, Otto Freundlich, Albert Gleizes und Jean Dubuffet und seinen Referenzen, Pablo Picasso und Georges Braque erwähnt.
Eine Präsentation von rohen Kunstwerken, mit denen Chaissac vergleichbar ist, betont die Modernität und Schärfe von Künstlern, die lange Zeit an den Rand der gelehrten Welt der Kunst gestellt wurden.

Gaston Chaissac is recognized today as a major artist of the twentieth century. Of modest origin, self-taught, his work is quickly noticed by the avant-garde creators of the cubist movement, who encourage him.
His corpus of drawings, a major part of his work, is abundant and lively. Gaston Chaissac was in fragile health and stayed at the sanatorium of Clairvivre, north of the Dordogne, between 1939 and 1942, a period of intense creation, but also of questions and existential crisis revealed by his prolific correspondence. The exhibition brings together some forty original drawings from this period, to which are added large-scale paintings by the artist. The entourage and artistic context are evoked by the works of creators with whom Chaissac had friendly and letter-writing relations early on, Otto Freundlich, Albert Gleizes and Jean Dubuffet, and his references, Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque.
A presentation of raw works of art, to which Chaissac resembles himself, emphasizes the modernity and acuity of artists long put on the sidelines of the scholarly world of art.

Gaston Chaissac è riconosciuto oggi come un importante artista del XX secolo. Di origine modesta, autodidatta, la sua opera fu subito notata dai creatori d'avanguardia del movimento cubista, che lo incoraggiarono.
Il suo corpus di disegni, la maggior parte della sua opera, è abbondante e di grande vivacità. Di salute fragile, Gaston Chaissac soggiornò al sanatorio di Clairvivre, a nord della Dordogna, tra il 1939 e il 1942, periodo di intensa creazione, ma anche di interrogativi e di crisi esistenziale rivelati dalla sua corrispondenza, prolifica. La mostra riunisce una quarantina di disegni originali inediti di questo periodo, ai quali si aggiungono dipinti in grande formato dell'artista. L'ambiente e il contesto artistico sono evocati dalle opere di creatori con i quali Chaissac ha mantenuto molto presto relazioni amichevoli e epistoliere, Otto Freundlich, Albert Gleizes e Jean Dubuffet, e i suoi riferimenti, Pablo Picasso e Georges Braque.
Una presentazione di opere d'arte grezza, a cui Chaissac assomiglia, insiste sulla modernità e l'acutezza di artisti a lungo collocati ai margini del mondo sapiente dell'arte.
