Commune de Nadaillac
Le bourg, 24590 Nadaillac
- Dordogne
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The agglomerated village has preserved at random its cobbled streets of many vestiges of the past. One can still observe on the lintel of the door of a house of the Rue Noire, so named in memory of the Black Prince (son of Edward III winner of John the Good in Poitiers in 1356) who stayed there, the weapons of Richard Lionheart.
An ancient 16th-century noble house features a curious octagonal stair turret, topped with lauzes, in the shape of a crushed bell topped with a stone mushroom, and an elegant square dovecote above a semi-circular portal. And how many Gothic or Renaissance mullioned windows, 17th and 18th century dormers, not to mention a gable decorated with twin bays or heavy slate roofs supported by imposing oak frames…
The church of Nadaillac, former priory-cure, was part of the snack of the abbey of Saint-Amand-de-Coly, which would explain why such a church was built in the 11th century in such a small town.
