Abbaye Saint-Pierre
Rue de l'Abbaye, 33180 Vertheuil
- Gironde
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The village of Vertheuil, under the patronage of its abbey, its abbey and its old castle, nestles in a superb setting of vineyards.
The church and the abbey house form a whole of the highest interest. The abbey, founded certainly before the twelfth century, was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman villa. The abbey of Saint-Pierre depended on the adjoining abbey. Its construction dates back to the 11th-12th centuries. It was rebuilt in the fourteenth, sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. The church is a fine example of Romanesque art inspired by saintongeaise.
