About the location

Église Saint-Romain
4 impasse Saint-Romain, 33390 Cartelègue
  • Gironde
  • Nouvelle-Aquitaine
The Cartelègue Saint-Romain church is in the Roman Saintongeais style. The initial plan consists of a single nave finished by a flat bedside, a square bell tower, and a side aisle to the north. In the Classical Middle Ages, it was one of the few priories of Cluny in Aquitaine that was subsequently attached to the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Sauveur in Blaye.
The base of the present church is Romanesque (12th century). There remains only the western massif of Saintongeais Romanesque style with the portal framed by two blind arcatures, a cornice and some carved modillions. The church also includes a contemporary composition of Santiago de Compostela made in 1997\. Indeed, Cartelègue, which is located on the «main road», is reported to the pilgrims by an act of October 16, 1759, which alluded to a hospital (place called the hospital). Excavations in 1987 and 1996 revealed burials from the 12th to 14th centuries, including those of pilgrims from Santiago de Compostela.
