It is one of the largest in New Aquitaine, reflecting the weight of the Reformed religion at Clairac. It succeeds three other temples: the first built in the sixteenth century and destroyed at the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes. The other two built in 1807 rue Saffin, then in 1824 place Viçose, too quickly built and become dangerous.

In 1530 Marguerite d'Angoulême, sister of François I, had Gérard Roussel appointed abbot of Clairac. He is a humanist ready to make the church evolve without breaking its unity. He therefore favours reform but quarrels with Calvin, whose radicalism he does not approve of. In 1598, Henri IV signed the edict of Nantes, Clairac became a Protestant security post. In 1685, Clairac the Protestant suffered the violence of the dragonnade companies and the repercussion of the revocation of the edict of Nantes. In 1801, the Concordat finally brought peace and interreligious tolerance. The current temple was built in 1853.
