The castle’s platform was occupied since prehistoric times and has yielded deposits from the Madgalenian and Azilian periods. Under the name of Roc de Tayac, the primitive castle was built around the thirteenth century. In turn, French and English during the Hundred Years' Wars, the castle suffered from successive sieges and had to be rebuilt in the 16th century. In 1595, it undergoes the siege of the revolted crunchers. In 1606, the king gave the order to dismantle it, undoubtedly following the conviction of Jean Guy de Beynac, involved in the conspiracy of the Duke of Bouillon. The building is partly dug into the rock, partly built. Its defense walls rise on a corbelled cliff. The rooms, the corridors, the stairs are carved into the rock. The building was used as a stone quarry after the revolution. In 1913, Denis Peyrony acquires on behalf of the State the ruins of the Château des Eyzies to install an excavation depot coupled with a real museum: another story was then to begin... In
