Maison de Grave
Maison de Grave, 33123 Le Verdon-sur-Mer
- Gironde
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
In the heart of the Verdon forest and close to the ocean beaches, the «House of Grave» is composed of several buildings built from 1840 by the State services as part of the work of coastal defense. From that time on, it was a question of fighting erosion and protecting the coast from the onslaught of the ocean. The conveyance of materials as well as the housing of labor require the development of this hamlet with the house of the engineer who dominates the site.
Since 2000, the Conservatoire du littoral, owner of the building and 42 hectares of land, has carried out major rehabilitation work. Illustrated with ancient documents, the visit will offer to discover the unknown history of this ensemble. A walk to the beach of Saint-Nicolas (500 m) will also allow to appreciate the great diversity of landscape, between forest of green oaks and pines, white dune and grey dune.
