With more than 1.3 million “Dead for France” soldiers, our country suffered terrible losses during the First World War. The Creuse was one of the departments most affected with more than 10,000 deaths, or nearly 5% of its population.
The mourning of the Great War led many French municipalities (95%), and especially Creusoises, to pay tribute to their «Morts pour la Patrie» by building memorials. Between 1919 and 1925, nearly 35,000 monuments to the dead were erected despite the difficulties of reconstruction involving various actors: representatives of the nation, the State, local authorities, etc.
On the occasion of the centenary of their construction, the Department of the Creuse wished to highlight these places of memory (diversity, history, architecture, symbolism, etc.) through a publication and exhibition that invites you to discover or rediscover this trace of a poignant past and a collective history made up of individual destinies.
