Let our speaker guide you and discover, in texts and images, the 50 years of work necessary for the construction of the Bernadotte barracks.
From 1807, the city of Pau, wishes to host a permanent garrison by the construction of a barracks, for the French troops from Spain, then for the English troops who occupy the region at the end of the Empire. It was in 1815 that the location of the future barracks was chosen on an open lot, owned by the city, formerly occupied by the gardens of the King of Navarre. Located on a huge plateau, the location allows to envisage a vast field of exercises and maneuvers.
Thus began the construction of the Bernadotte barracks, which would last for nearly 50 years.
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, the Bernadotte barracks opens its doors! Be guided by our speaker and his rich story of anecdotes about the history of this iconic building in Place Verdun through an exhibition of 10 panels richly illustrated by numerous archival documents.
