Discover the journey of renowned women scientists during a visit to the Museum’s collections.

The Museum’s new permanent itinerary, entitled «Nature as seen by men» is in fact enamelled by male personalities. Collectors, travellers, curators, researchers are rarely women, at least until the last quarter of the 20th century. However, some female personalities stand out and will be evoked during a visit of the collections that will present «Nature seen by Women».

Founded in 1791, the Bordeaux Natural History Office is one of the oldest public collections in France. It first takes place on the aisles of Tourny in the former hotel of the Academy which it shares with the gallery of paintings, the lapidary museum, the library, the school of fine arts and an observatory. It was opened to the public in 1811.
In 1857, the Hotel de Lisleferme, built in 1780 on the edge of the Public Garden, was acquired by the municipality. The building has been extensively transformed and refurbished. At the end of 1862, the collections were transferred and the new establishment was renamed the Natural History Museum. The collections are presented according to the objective set by the scientists: to describe, name and classify nature, the living as the mineral world.
The expanded and renovated museum of the 21st century aims to show how our gaze on nature has evolved, from yesterday to today, how the acquisition of new knowledge can challenge our representations. To d
