Église Saint-Jean d’Étampes
Place Saint-Jean d’Étampes, 33650 La Brède
- Gironde
- Nouvelle-Aquitaine
This is the oldest building in the commune. Dedicated to Saint John of Etampes or Estampes, it owes its name to the presence on the parish of a templar installation on the site of one of the oldest houses of the Bourg.
Following the outrages of time, the monument was the subject of a reconstruction in neo-Romanesque style by the architect Gustave Alaux, friend and disciple of Viollet Le Duc between 1854 and 1864.
The original building retains the façade of the nave and the central portal in Saintongeais Romanesque style, dating from the 11th century. To note, the magnificent modillions of the portal.
The restoration carried out by the Commune between 2000 and 2003 highlights the beauty of the complex in the heart of the ancient Bourg.
