The commune was officially created in 1863 by the will of Napoleon III. Its name is a tribute to the Battle of Solferino, a victory won by Napoleonic troops over the Austrians in 1859\. The Landais of the 34th Infantry Regiment who had behaved valiantly there were thus honoured, as well as the 17th Mounted Artillery Regiment (17th RAC).
