Founded in 1791, the Bordeaux Natural History Office is one of the oldest public collections in France. It first takes place on the aisles of Tourny in the former hotel of the Academy which it shares with the gallery of paintings, the lapidary museum, the library, the school of fine arts and an observatory. It was opened to the public in 1811.

At the end of 1862, the collections were transferred and the new establishment was renamed the Natural History Museum. The collections are presented according to the objective set by the scientists: to describe, name and classify nature, the living as the mineral world.
