At the heart of this program is a youthful work by Beethoven: the Trio opus 87, originally for two oboes and English horn, transcribed for various formations. Here, the trio is performed by two violins and a viola. At the same time brilliant, light and lively, the work is full of Viennese elegance. Anton Dvorak’s Terzetto opus 14 opens this concert. The piece was written in 1887 for two violinist friends of the Czech composer, who also played viola. With its flowing melodies and spirited rhythms, this seductive page offers the best of Dvorak’s chamber music. The Serenade opus 12 by Zoltan Kodaly closes the program. Composed in 1920 when the composer found himself in the throes of personal difficulties, the piece nevertheless met with great success at the Salzburg chamber music festival. Bartok - contemporary composer of Kodaly - is impressed by this serenade which he describes as a product at the same time “authentic and modern Hungarian culture (…), extraordinarily rich in exotic melodies influenced by the strong rubato of old peasant music.”
