Two thousand years ago this was the largest sanctuary city in the north of Gaul. Exceptional for its size (250 hectares), the so-called Gisacum, was also by the size of some of its monuments (the temple in particular) and its hexagonal shape never seen elsewhere in the Roman world. The religious capital of the Eburovices Aulerques, Gisacum was founded at the beginning of the 1st century AD and abandoned in the second half of the 3rd century. Although it has not yet revealed all its secrets since the beginning of the ninth century, this is the reason why the Archaeological Mission of the Eure Department is continuing its research in order to better understand this unique site. Today, Gisacum is not only an archaeological site under excavation but also an interpretation centre. This centre traces the history of its foundation to its rediscovery by archaeologists as well as an archaeological garden, showing the remains of the city’s thermal baths.
