Exhibition «The old bridge and its mill»
As part of the future bicycle-road linking Giverny to the Andelys, and which will run along the Seine right bank, the arches of the medieval bridge previously walled have found their original opening.
The restoration of the monument will restore the three remaining arches to their former appearance, when they were 25 in number and supported a bridge linking Vernon to Vernonnet via the Isle of Talus. The bridge also housed several mills, the last of which, at the foot of the Tourelles, is today the symbol of Vernon. The entire building is in the process of being classified as a historical heritage site.
Often damaged by the numerous floods of the Seine, the medieval bridge was more wood than stone at the end of his life. The bridge was partially destroyed between Talus Island and Vernon, probably to facilitate navigation. The second part left to the abandonment has however made it possible to save the old mill and the three remaining arches.
The new bridge, Napoleonic, essential to Vernon’s life, was inaugurated in 1861. The latter has now disappeared, and his only memory resides in the archives of the City, where we learn that it was built a few meters upstream of the medieval bridge to ensure greater stability.
