Free visit of the castle of Carrouges
This prestigious residence is considered one of the two jewels of the Norman heritage, with Mont Saint-Michel, and a landmark of the Orne. First witness of the architecture of the Renaissance in Normandy, among the first works of the Gabriel dynasty, architects of Versailles in the eighteenth century, Carrouges and its domain of 10 hectares in the heart of the regional natural park Normandie Maine, testifies to the art of living in Normandy with its original furniture and works of art gathered for seven centuries by the same family! Opened all year round by the National Monuments Centre, the Carrouges Castle immerses us in the world of large stately homes. Its discovery begins with the green gardens in the heart of the Norman landscape. Then comes the rose of the bricks which, in a dialogue with the slate of the high roofs and granite, are reflected in the water flukes. Carrouges, whose Lord marked the judicial history of the Middle Ages, this castle which welcomed Louis XI and Catherine de Medici, is a great witness to the history and the sociability of large families. It is in this spirit that new rooms have been open to the public since the summer of 2021. In partnership with the Musée de la chasse et de la nature in Paris, they present an exceptional selection of works and hunting objects from prestigious collections, illustrating the history and traditions of the Veneer in France for two centuries. They remind us of how a large family with its way of living and managing its estate for 700 years was able to shape a landscape, an economy, an artistic and cultural life in the heart of the Orne. Come and share this universe in the heart of Normandy. Enter the great and small history of the Orne!
