An eminently picturesque city, Caen has always attracted artists. This movement was accentuated during the 19th century, carried by English painters and engravers. The numerous local scholars and antique dealers also played an important role in the recognition of the Caen heritage while the first photographers made the city a field of experimentation. The eyes of these French and foreign artists focused on some emblematic places and monuments of the old Caen while testifying to the modernization of the city center.
