The importance of hygiene for health, recognized since antiquity, has been variously considered according to the times. Some medical procedures were performed very early on, as evidenced by the furniture collected during the archaeological excavations. A reflection on what preceded the advances of the nineteenth century in the knowledge of the origin of certain ailments and their treatment and in the creation of new medical instruments, is proposed.
