Saint-Louis is the oldest Parisian hospital started under Henri IV following epidemics of plague. Sick and carers lived cut off from the world, in an almost autarky made possible by the presence of orchards, vegetable gardens, cultures of medicinal plants behind the outer wall. There were then four square buildings housing administrative services and nursing staff. In the centre, a third enclosure, the "quadrilateral", surrounded by pavilions, was reserved for the sick. Thus was realized the confinement of the contagious and .. those who cared for them! In the 19th century, Saint-Louis became the centre of the French school of dermatology and in 1880, it was decided to build a dermatology museum to house the mouldings made by Baretta (4807 pieces). Construction started in 1882 by the architect Vera and completed in 1884\. Official inauguration in 1889.
