At Mont-Valérien, in Suresnes (92), 1,008 men were shot between 1941 and 1944. They were resisters and hostages, Jews, communists, foreigners and French. Some were able to write messages on the walls of a disused chapel, where they waited for German soldiers to come and pick them up and take them to the firing squad. Sometimes demanding, these messages are as many traces of life that allow us to grasp the diversity of the commitments and origins of the shootings of Mont-Valérien.

About the location

Mémorial du Mont-Valérien
Avenue du Professeur Léon-Bernard 92150 Suresnes
  • Hauts-de-Seine
  • Île-de-France
A medieval place of worship that became a military fortress during the 19th century, Mont-Valérien was the main place where resistance fighters and hostages were executed in France by the German army during the Second World War.
The multiplicity of the routes of the 1008 shot, allows us today to describe the diversity. After the war, the site was chosen to honour the memory of the dead for France from 1939 to 1945, and on June 18, 1960, General de Gaulle inaugurated the Memorial of Fighting France.
These men, assassinated because they were resisters, hostages, Jews or communists are as many reminders to our history that naturally made this site the first of the High places of national memory of the Ministry of Armies, today managed by the National Board of Veterans and Victims of War.
