The History of Medicine Museum

A university museum, its history

Louis XV asks Jacques Gondoin, architect, to build the College of Surgery, rue des Cordeliers, today rue de l'École de Médecine.
As early as 1769, an "instrument room" was incorporated into his plans. However, it was not until the early 20th century that the question of a museum was seriously discussed.
It was Professor Mouquin, appointed to the Chair in the History of Medicine in 1951, who really stimulated the project with the support of Dean Binet. The museum will initially be reserved for professors and students of the Faculty of Medicine and finally opened its doors to the general public in 1994.

A university museum, its collections

These collections, the oldest in Europe, were brought together by Dean Lafaye in the 18th century, then added a set of pieces that covered the different branches of the art of operation until the end of the 19th century. There are notably instruments used in the care of Louis XIV, as well as a few kits of doctors and surgeons or even instruments of physiology.
Today, the Museum of History of Medicine has found its place among the many Parisian museums and enjoys an international reputation.
