The Direction des Archives départementales is a department of the Department of Seine-et-Marne, under the scientific and technical control of the Ministry of Culture (Service Interministériel des Archives de France). Like all departmental archives, the Archives de la Seine-et-Marne date back to the Revolution. They were originally formed (1796-1797) by the gathering in Melun of the archives of the administrations of the Ancien Régime, ecclesiastical establishments and families of emigrants. The objective is to keep "papers and titles" to provide legal guarantees to citizens, especially those who acquire national property.
Over the years, the archives of the revolutionary period and the records of public administrations based in the department, as well as deposits, private donations and acquisitions, have grown continuously up to the present day.
In 1989, they were transferred to Dammarie-lès-Lys in a contemporary building, redeveloped in 2003 to provide readers with new spaces, adapted
