Free tour of the reading room

In the reading room, visitors will be greeted by an exhibition on the 100th anniversary of the French Bishops' Conference, the national episcopal collegial body. A second exhibition fed by numerous archival pieces will be proposed exceptionally on the theme of the General Chaplaincy of Prisoners of War. The archives of this chaplaincy make it possible to understand how the spiritual assistance of French and German prisoners was made during and after the Second World War. Finally, issues of the Valiant Hearts and Valiant Souls newspapers will be shown.

Guided tour of the archive stores

Visits to the archive stores will be offered to visitors every half hour or so. They will be able to wander through archives stores that are usually closed to the public. The tours will be led by the archivists themselves. Visitors will learn about the contemporary archives of the Catholic Church in France and how archivists work. Archives will be exhibited and shown during the visit.

About the location

The mission of the CNAEF is to collect, classify, preserve, communicate and enhance the archives of the services and bodies of the French Bishops' Conference (CEF), a collegial body of bishops in France, created in 1964\. It also welcomes, preserves and values donations and archives relating to the history of the Catholic Church in France from various sources: religious institutes, lay movements, private persons, etc. Because of French ecclesial history (Revolution of 1789 and nationalisation of the property of the clergy, concordatary regime until 1905, creation of the Episcopal Conference in 1964, etc.), almost all the documents kept at the CNAEF date from the twentieth century, and are mostly after the Second Vatican Council. In the summer of 2019, nearly 6 linear kilometres of documents are preserved.
