Visit of the last residence of Léon GAMBETTA
17 and 18 September 2022Passed
CMN Maison des Jardies

You will discover the interior of a 19th century country house built on a hillside. With the help of documents, objects and works of art that will be presented to you, you will understand why Balzac moved here in 1837 and what his projects were.
The journey will lead you to discover the life of Léon Gambetta, who died here on December 31, 1882.
Deputy, then President of the Chamber of Deputies, three times minister and finally President of the Council: his political life is punctuated by an outstanding commitment for the Republic.
The architecture of the house allows to capture the evolution of the Parisian countryside throughout the nineteenth century. The city gains ground on the countryside. Urbanization is organized along traffic routes. The countryside has become attractive. The rich Parisian families settled there as a resort and sometimes even at home.

Garden house built on the south slope of the Domaine national de Saint-Cloud. Balzac, owner of a large piece of land including the current house, had built a chalet, now extinct, and for which he imagined many decorations of marble and cedar. Gambetta bought the old gardener’s house in 1878 and died there in 1882 at the age of 44\. The house was ceded to the State in 1887.
