The 13th century castle built by Philippe-Auguste and completed around 1222 to protect the outskirts of Paris succeeds a first wooden building dating from Hugues Capet. In Ile-de-France, Dourdan is one of the only 13th century fortresses that has preserved most of its structures. Symbol of royal power, the keep is circular in shape with three levels. It is a remarkable example of military architecture, with beautiful vaults of warheads. The Municipal Museum is housed in an old 18th century salt attic built by the Marquis de Verteillac.
