This conference visit to the Fifth Arrondissement is a measure of the privileged links between the Arab world and France. The IMA is the starting point for the walk that ends at the mosque in Paris.
The course
This walking route is four stages, about 2h of rich discoveries:
- The IMA, whose mission is to make the Arab world known, is the starting point. Its building, with its contemporary architecture, contributes to the dialogue between Western and Arab cultures.
- The visit continues in front of the Collège de France and the Sorbonne, to evoke the first teachings of Arabic under Francis I, the French curiosity for the Orient in the 18th century and under the Empire.
- Then, in one of the oldest churches of Paris, Saint-Julien-le-Pauvre will talk about the places of worship of the Arab Christians of France.
- We recall, the attraction exerted by Paris on the Arab world. The presence of reformers and Arab scholars in the nineteenth century in the neighborhood, the debates of ideas that agitated them. This is where the first printing plants, the first Arabic-language newspapers in France were born. Today’s Arab bookstores are the heirs.
- The walk ends with a visit to the Mosque of Paris.
