Founded in Merovingian times, the abbey of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés quickly became one of the most important in Île-de-France. Famous for its pilgrimage, it reached its peak at the end of the Middle Ages. But its secularization and the ruin of conventual buildings precipitated its decline from the seventeenth century. The site was owned by various landowners until the 20th century before becoming the largest municipal park developed in the 1930s and 1980s.
