Musée départemental Stéphane Mallarmé
Pont de Valvins - 4 promenade Stéphane-Mallarmé 77870 Vulaines-sur-Seine
- Seine-et-Marne
- Île-de-France
From 1874 until his death in 1898, Stéphane Mallarmé loved to stay in this former inn which became his home, which faces the Seine and the forest of Fontainebleau. Today, the museum dedicated to him restores the charm of this resort through the furniture and familiar objects of the poet, such as the table of «Literary Tuesdays», around which sat famous artists, and also his library and the works of his friends painters and sculptors: Gauguin, Whistler, Degas… The beautiful garden where Mallarmé loved «to wash flowers before his own» contributes to the enjoyment of this place of memory. One can land there with a book, and bring back, in September, apples. In the rooms on the ground floor, the temporary exhibitions complete the evocation of this exceptional writer who played a leading role in the intellectual and artistic life of his time.
