190 years of public primary schools in Saint-Maur
“Every commune is required, either by itself or by meeting in one or more neighbouring communes, to maintain at least one elementary school” states article 9 of the law of 28 June 1833 defended by François Guizot, Minister of Public Education at the beginning of the reign of Louis-Philippe I. This is the first stage of education for all in France. In Saint-Maur, this resulted in the construction by the municipality of a first public primary school in the late 1830s in Vieux-Saint-Maur. The first in a long series! Saint-Maur now has twelve primary schools, the oldest of which (the Auguste Marin school) dates back to 1860. Built over a long period, these buildings are the architectural witnesses of their time and of the evolution of the awareness of the needs of the child and are a lasting heritage of our city: we no longer count the generations that have succeeded! Enlarged, transformed, redeveloped, reinvented… come and discover the rich history of these buildings that welcome thousands of children every day.
