Guided tour of the Hotel de Carondelet
Last witness to the residence of the family of Carondelet (1491-1621) who gave two presidents of the Privy Council in Flanders, hotel of the superintendents of the Mont de Piété de Valenciennes (1625-1794), housing of the Valenciennes municipal credit director (1802-1843), the last witness of the Maison Cellier (1912-1960) and the Hôtel de Carondelet, its current volume dates back to 1455-1460. Many witnesses of this period persist on the floor and on the gable of the facade overlooking the Green Square.This place was visited by several sovereigns including Emperor Charles V, King Philip II of Spain, the Archduke Albert of Habsburg and the Infante Isabella of Spain, and by many celebrities including the philosopher Erasmus. The visit of Charles V saw the transformation of the place into a palace with Italian Renaissance architecture and the entire interior distribution testifies to the latter. Architecture keeping the testimony of a flamboyant Gothic decoration cohabiting with the first characters of the Italian Renaissance it is also the oldest building of civil architecture of Valenciennes.
