Opening of the shipyard

The Regional Federation for Maritime Culture and Heritage – FRCPM – is opening the doors of its Calais shipyard. His visit is an opportunity to gain a better understanding of traditional shipbuilding, to observe several regional heritage vessels being restored and to discover the diversity of collections of objects, tools and documents collected by the FRCPM.

Listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Created in 2008, this wood shipyard preserves traditional know-how, transmits it and helps to strengthen the regional heritage fleet. It is led by a shipwright, supported by volunteers. For more than 10 years, a dozen boats have been repaired or refurbished, several rescue operations organized and small units built. The know-how of the shipyard is now included in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Boats, tools, objects

These open houses are an opportunity to meet the volunteers of the Friends of the Dundee Lorette Association, who are restoring one of the oldest traditional boats in the area, and to visit two former lifeboats. An exhibition on traditional shipbuilding, enriched with many ancient tools, is also presented. The collections of objects, tools and documents collected by the FRCPM are also on display, in order to foreshadow a future maritime heritage interpretation centre. Friday, September 16 will be reserved for the reception of schoolchildren, with visits and animations on the theme of seamanship.
