Engraving and stone cutting workshops:
Engravers and stonemasons carry out demonstrations and share with you the difficulties and successes encountered during the restoration of the Memorial. And for those who wish to leave their mark in the stone our engravers and tailors introduce you to their technique. The flowers (stone insert) and other scissors or mesh will have no secrets for you.
Horticulture Workshop:
Horticulture plays a very important role in our sites, giving them a peaceful and timeless atmosphere. Our gardeners are also here to talk with you about lawn care techniques, the rules that govern planting at the foot of steles and the species of roses and other plants that bloom in our cemeteries. They share with you their method for a grass cut with the cord by revealing to you in particular the machines used, created specifically for the Commission.
Continuous guided tours:
Our Franco-British guides are also at your disposal for guided tours of the site. Discover the history of the Battle of the Somme, the architecture of the Memorial, the Franco-British cemetery or the personal stories of soldiers buried or commemorated in Thiepval.
Duration of the visit: about 40 minutes Last visit: 4PM.

The Franco-British Memorial in Thiepval is one of the largest memorials in the world. Inaugurated in 1932, it lists the names of more than 72,000 soldiers lost in the fighting. Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, the Memorial recalls that the Battle of the Somme, from July 1 to November 18, 1916, was the bloodiest of the Great War with 1,200,000 casualties. Hundreds of thousands of visitors (a large majority of whom are British) visit this site every year on pilgrimage.
