PAH Senlis à Ermenonville

The chapel existed before the cathedral took shape in the 12th century. From the 14th century, it was heavily modified and decorated with frescoes. The relics of Saint-Rieul de Senlis, famous evangelizer of the region and first bishop of Senlis in the 4th century, are treasured in the chapel. The space also serves as sacristy and worship space. Notre-Dame Cathedral was built, for the most part, during the third quarter of the 12th century, when the royal city of Senlis was experiencing a true “golden age”. Profoundly altered in the 13th and 16th centuries, it enjoys, compared to many others, a relatively modest reputation only its small size and the many alterations suffered since its construction, without however justifying it. In fact, Notre-Dame de Senlis has strong assets that will win over both the art historian and the visitor. Important witness of the early Gothic architecture and the complexity of its sources, its great merit is to achieve a balanced and coherent synthesis between respect for proven formulas inherited from Romanesque architecture and the most innovative trends of the art of building of its time.
