The City Library has been in operation since 1951 in a building that was extensively renovated in the 18th century. The conventual church, built in the 13th and 14th century, is a masterpiece of the architecture of the mendicant orders. Still partially dedicated to the cult, one can admire the masterpiece of Martin Schongauer: the Virgin with the rose bush. The gallery of the cloister, rebuilt in the middle of the fifteenth century, serves as a setting for one of the most beautiful old collections of the province. Founded in 1803, the municipal library of Colmar was originally constituted by the meeting of monastic libraries of Haute-Alsace, put since 1789 «under the hand of the Nation». In 2012, the departure of the public reading collections towards the Media-Culture Edmond Gerrer allows the Library of the Dominicans to henceforth focus on its functions of conservation and valorization of the rich Colmariean collections and gives it vocation to become a heritage library of first rank
