About the location

Chapelle de la Vierge
Rue du fossé, 67150 Hindisheim
  • Bas-Rhin
  • Grand Est
This chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin and the 14 auxiliary saints is locally nicknamed Oberkirche. It dates from 1553, but the walls are earlier, from the fourteenth century. A chronicle of 1723 tells that the reconstruction of 1553 is the work of the inhabitants themselves. Sold as a national property during the Revolution, it was reopened to worship in 1813.
The windows are all of different shapes and sizes. Those of the choir date from the eighteenth century and have stained glass windows of 1948 signed by the painter-glassmaker Alphonse Ehret.
Its great particularity is its half-timbered bell tower. Indeed, in Alsace, there are only 2 religious buildings with a half-timbered bell tower: The chapel of the Virgin in Hindisheim and the Protestant church of Uttenhoffen.
