In 1871, after a destructive and murderous siege, the city of Strasbourg was ruined. The German Empire, which had just annexed Alsace and the Moselle, immediately considered erecting new fortifications. Between 1872 and 1876, an enclosure of detached forts was built around the city, at least 6 kilometres from the outskirts of Strasbourg. In the event of a new siege, the enemy artillery had to be removed from the city, according to the last precepts of the fortification. The construction site has just been completed, new works have been started to set up the ramparts of the 16th and 17th centuries, inside which the city is cramped, and build a new walled urban enclosure. The city was thus able to expand significantly to the north and west, and the city and Empire administrations carried out ambitious urbanization projects. This is the birth of what is now called the Neustadt.
