This painter of Croatian origin arrived in Alsace in the 1970s began to paint under glass, with works often related to Croatian naive art.
The artist was born in the same region as Ivan Generalic and Ivan Rabuzin, two famous naive Yugoslav painters. However, Nenad Levatic has explored many stylistics and techniques, as well as a plurality of representation topics. Its meticulous execution and mastery of the colorful palette offer the view a unique dreamlike universe.
The exhibition presents multiple themes such as the villages or landscapes of his native Croatia as well as portraits of naked women or religious icons. He notably experimented with the link between painting and photography, allowing a very modern look. The artist also develops a work of sculptures, continuing his research with real drawings in space.
Levatic’s creations interact with the museum’s collections, where contemporary glass painting remains a privileged object of study. This technique is part of an ancient tradition in Alsace, used especially for wedding or funeral memories, and it continues to fascinate current artists who help to renew its use and diversify its forms.

In a completely renovated Renaissance building, three levels of exhibitions of popular images painted by hand, cut out in the gutter or painted under glass, retrace the existence of a beautiful local tradition somewhat forgotten: witnesses of the major stages of life (memories of baptisms, confirmations, marriages, etc.). They are the fragile and sensitive legacy of an Alsatian thought and popular art that some contemporary artists reinterpret and thus perpetuate.
