Guided tour of the temporary exhibition «And Johann Gottfried Tulla created the Rhine»
Unknown in France, the Badese engineer Johann Gottfried Tulla (1770-1828), by rectifying the course of the Rhine in the 19th century, to stop the floods and facilitate navigation, gave the river its current face and created the Rhine landscape that we know.
While the rehabilitation of the river has achieved its objectives, it has also profoundly transformed the Rhine landscape and its biotopes, giving the river its contemporary face and raising new challenges.
In a second part, the exhibition presents the Rhine «recreated», through the work of contemporary artists combining sculpture, video, graphic and sound works.
This exhibition is part of the 2022/2023 exhibition cycle initiated by the Upper Rhine Museum Network, with the unique theme and unifying theme: the Rhine. Some 40 French, Swiss and German museums are participating in this multifaceted project.
