From the Neolithic to the Carolingian Empire, archaeological and archival evidence attests to the occupation of the Ensisheim site. It was in the 13th century that the city acquired its power thanks to the Habsburg family. Surrounded by an enclosure, it became, under Rodolphe I of Habsburg, at the head of the Germanic Empire, the administrative center of all the neighboring territories. In the sixteenth century, this role is affirmed, Ferdinand 1st of Habsburg orders the construction to Ensisheim of a palace intended to accommodate the government of the Chamber. Construction of the Regency Palace began in 1535\. All the administration of the Austrian possessions on the Upper Rhine is managed within this palace. Ensisheim obtained the title of Imperial Free City.
