The history of Saint Peter the Younger is marked by many stages. Originally founded extra-muros in the 7th-8th century, this Romanesque church is adorned with the Gothic style in the 13th century.
The building then underwent a number of changes, due to its transformation into a Protestant church following the reform and the capture of Strasbourg by Louis XIV. The «simultaneum» (the use of the church for both cults, Catholic and Protestant) is then in force and will continue until the end of the 19th century.
The restoration of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune was entrusted to Carl Schäfer, whose intervention marked the history of the building. He repainted the exterior of the church, drawing inspiration from traces of exterior polychromy. But this polychromy disappears in the 1960s, during which the church is repainted in a color that is not without evoking the pink sandstone of the Vosges.
