The Battle of Verdun, February 21, 1916 - December 1916, 300 days and 300 nights of fierce, terrible fighting. 26,000,000 shells fired by artillery, or 6 shells per square metre, thousands of bodies shredded, about 300,000 French and German soldiers missing. The ossuary keeps within it the remains of the soldiers who died on the battlefield in order to preserve their memory. The building was built in 1920, and opened in 1932.
