Donjon de l'ancienne maison seigneuriale de l'abbaye de Clairvaux
3 place de la Mairie, 10200 Champignol-lez-Mondeville
The tower is today the only vestige of a stately residence dating from the 13th century and which also consisted of a house with chapel as well as a barn. The tower is built on a square plan and its construction in cut stone and squared rubble, as well as the decoration of its entrance door and its narrow openings, are in harmony with the architectural creations of the first decades of the 13th century. This tower has two independent floors and it is assumed that an exterior wooden staircase allowed access to the upstairs door. Upstairs, latrines still remain. This building was probably not intended to serve as a dwelling but rather as a place of justice. The records show that the tower was used as a seigneurial prison. Its little appearance strengthened the power of the Abbey of Clairvaux at this period. Finally, it stands out as the only medieval building to date preserved from the former seigneurial residences of the abbey.
